Common Paintball Myths Busted: Freezing Paintballs, FPS & Mask Safety

May 11, 2026 | By Maxine Denis

Every year I hear the same legends. The same “back in my day” stories. The same cousin-of-a-friend horror tales.

So call me Adam Savage. Let’s bust a few.

busted
Myth – Busted!

Myth #1: “We used to freeze paintballs and shoot them at each other.”

No, you didn’t.

Well… maybe you put paintballs in your mom’s freezer when you were 15. What you did as a teenager is between you and your conscience.

But here’s the reality: average quality paintballs do not freeze at normal freezer temperatures. Unless you had dry ice lying around next to the Hot Pockets, you were just shooting cold paint.

And even if you somehow did manage to freeze them solid? They would almost certainly jam your marker before you got a shot off. Paintballs are designed to be fragile. That’s kind of the point.

So no, you weren’t launching frozen marbles. You were launching chilly disappointment.

Myth #2: “Can you fill my tank up more so it shoots harder/faster?”

No. I cannot.

Not without risking my life. And I regret to inform you that my life is worth more than your desire to hit Jerry in the nuts with maximum enthusiasm.

More importantly, that’s not how it works.

Your tank simply stores air. The velocity of your marker is controlled by the marker’s internal regulator and the FPS adjustment, not how “full” your tank is.

Turning up FPS is what makes a marker shoot harder or faster. And we are not turning that up because:

  1. Safety.

  2. Jerry’s future children.

  3. Field rules exist for a reason.

Overfilling a tank doesn’t give you more power. It gives you a blown burst disk… or, if you’re really reckless, a catastrophic tank failure.

So no, we are not playing air-pressure roulette.

Myth #3: “I heard a paintball went through someone’s mask.”

No.

Well, not at Champion Valley.

Our masks are rated to ANSI safety standards, which means even if someone tried to crank a marker up to absurd levels, the paintball would not penetrate the lens.

This is also why we strongly recommend buying masks from reputable dealers and not the cheapest thing you can find online. Legitimate paintball masks are designed and tested for impact resistance. Thin, off-brand lenses are not.

So no, a paintball is not going to go through your mask here. That’s not a thing.

Paintball has enough adrenaline built in. We don’t need urban legends to spice it up.

If you’ve heard another one floating around, send it my way. I’ve got my safety goggles on and I’m ready.
