What Is Archery Tag? Rules, Game Modes & What to Expect

June 22, 2026 | By Maxine Denis

First things first: it’s not as terrifying as it sounds.

You are not shooting sharp, medieval war arrows at your friends. The arrows we use have large, soft, foam “marshmallow” tips specifically designed for this activity. They bounce. They sting a little. They do not impale.

You’ll use a traditional bow (no compound bows, Legolas) and split into two teams. Each player gets 1–2 arrows depending on group size, and then it’s on.

Archery Tag Player Dodges Arrow

How It Works

The most common format is dodgeball-style:

  • Shoot arrows at the other team

  • If you get hit, you’re out

  • If you catch an arrow mid-air, you stay in and bring a teammate back in

Yes, you can also ditch the bow and throw the arrows like oversized foam darts. It’s chaotic. It’s effective. It’s encouraged.

But dodgeball is just the beginning.

We Can Mix Up the Game Modes

Archery Tag gets really fun when you start adding objectives. We regularly run:

🏳 Capture the Flag

Grab the opposing team’s flag and get it back to your base without getting tagged.

🛡 VIP / Protect the President

Each team designates one VIP. If your VIP gets hit, game over. Expect full-body shielding and dramatic sacrifices.

⚔ Center Flag Push

Both teams race to control an object in the center of the field. High intensity. Zero chill.

🧟 Elimination Rounds

Last team standing wins. Simple. Brutal. Effective.

🏰 Fort Defense

One team defends a position while the other attacks in waves.

Because the arrows are soft-tipped and the pace is fast, we can switch modes quickly and keep the energy high.

Who Is It For?

We offer archery tag as a standalone 2-hour activity for players as young as 8 years old.

You can also add it onto another activity for a 1-hour session.

We provide:

  • Bows

  • Foam-tipped arrows

  • Protective face masks

You just bring the competitive spirit.

What It Feels Like

Archery tag is high energy. Think soccer-level cardio. You’re constantly moving, dodging, retrieving arrows, and repositioning.

There aren’t many built-in breaks during rounds, so if you’re stacking activities, here’s the pro move:

  • Doing paintball + archery tag? Take a break in between.

  • Doing paintball + axe throwing + archery tag? Go:

    1. Paintball

    2. Axe throwing (heart rate reset)

    3. Archery tag

Your lungs will thank you.

The Vibe

Archery tag is competitive, fast, and a little ridiculous in the best way. It’s tactical enough to feel strategic, chaotic enough to feel fun, and safe enough that parents don’t panic.

It’s dodgeball with bows.
It’s cardio disguised as warfare.
It’s your chance to channel your inner Katniss without the dystopian storyline.

And yes, it’s way more intense than people expect.
